Beginners Level 1

Course Outline:

● Flexibility and strength exercise to prepare the body for Kathak and for preventing injuries in any movement practice.

● Brief history of Kathak, understanding what it was and is today.

● Introduction to what are gharanas or “schools” of Kathak.

● Introduction to old and new Kathak artists today.

● Ang or posture in Kathak

● Understanding lay and taal (Tempo and Rhythm)

● Introduction to Teentaal (A rhythmic cycle)

● Learning to recite Teentaal

● Introduction to and learning the basic Tatkaar (Footwork) in Teentaal

● Learning basic hand gestures used in Kathak

● Hand variations in Kathak and learning to do them with the Tatkaar (footwork)

Course Objectives:

● Develop and apply a basic understanding of the body and warm-ups and cool-downs, including breathing techniques.

● Develop awareness of body placement, control and strength

● Develop and apply basic movement techniques taught in this course.

● Develop and apply the understanding of Tempo and Rhythm in Kathak in recitation and also in movement practice.

● Recognize and demonstrate movement from Kathak terminology.

● Have a basic understanding of Kathak as a movement language.

● Finding pleasure in a new movement language, embracing the happiness that dance brings to us no matter how technical a form may be.

Course Format:

The format of this course will resemble that of a dance class augmented by lectures where technique and theory are developed simultaneously. Students are encouraged to keep a notebook designated specifically to the course and to take notes on their own. Simultaneously, theoretical notes and practice audios will be provided in a shared Google Drive folder.

Recommended Attire for class:

Comfortable clothing that gives enough lower body and upper body space to move and stretch; Anything above the ankles to be able to move the feet freely.

Duration:

1 class, 90 minutes per week.
Total: 15 weeks – 22.5 hours

Attendance:

All online lessons will be recorded and provided to the students after class. If however, a student is not able to attend a class due to any reasons, they must inform before class begins. If they fail to inform their absences a total of three times, they will not have access to the live classes or recordings any more.
