What is Bharatanatyam?
Bharatanatyam is an ancient South Asian dance form that originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu in South India. It is known for the strength and precision in its form as well as the plié like position, which is one of the main positions in Bharatanatyam. The movement language is embellished with detailed hand gestures and facial expressions that further enhance the story telling aspect of Bharatanatyam.
Course Outline – Beginner’s Level 1:
● Flexibility and stregnth exercises to prepare the body for Bharatanatyam and for preventing injuries in any movement practice.
● Brief history and evolution of Bharatanatyam, understanding what it was and is today.
● Basic positions of Bharatanatyam
● Elements of Bharatanatyam (Nritta, Nritya and Natya)
● Detailed understanding of the araimandi (half sitting) position to prevent injuries and increase awareness and strength in the position.
● Adavus (Tatta adavu, Natta adavu, Visharu adavu)
● Samyuta Hasta Mudra (Single hand gestures)
● Sthana, Paada and Drishti bheda (Leg, feet and eye movements)
